A mother's love

Once upon a time, in a small town far away lived an old widow and her only son. She was a hard working woman and managed although she had no one to help her with raising her son with love and dignity.
Time was passing in the little town peacefully. Her son grew up to be the most handsome man in the town and as all people, he had his own gift from God: he was a great musician. He sang and played the guitar like and angel.
But one day, the world was turn upside down for the people of this insignificant little village. A young lady and her maid had moved into the town. The young lady was so beautiful that men and women gasped in her sight.
Time went by, as every man, young and old, fell in love with her. But she declined everyone’s love, or made them fulfill impossible tasks, that either made them quit or die trying. The boy too was surrendered to her love, but he never expressed his feelings to the young woman.
One Sunday after service, the young man was all alone singing in the woods just outside the town when the girl approached him and confessed him undying love for him. The boy was amazed by her beauty. She asked him to play the guitar so she could sing, and as she sang, she bewitched the boy. She told him that in order to be with him he had to answer her one simple question: Who did he love more, her or his mother?
The boy immediately answered that she was his only love. Prove it! the girl said. Bring me your mother’s beating heart by sunset. And then she left him alone. The boy ran home with a burden on his heart. He loved his mother but the girl had bewitched him. When he reached home, his mother was calmly asleep in her bed. Without thinking too much, he grabbed a knife and took his mothers heart out from her chest. Crying, the boy left his house with blood dripping from his face and hands. He ran to the woods.
But as he approached the girl he tripped and fell before her feet. As his chest touched the ground the boy gasped, and the heart glowed and asked: Are you well my only son? Are you hurt?

All that time the girl had just been standing there, but as she heard the mother’s voice, a tear run down her cheek and a scream similar to a wounded animals left her mouth. She fell on her knees crying, picked the heart up and held it as close as she could to hers. And she cried and screamed, and while this was happening she started to change. Her features melted, as she transformed before the boy’s eyes: now she looked more human and for a split of a second it was not the girl hugging the heart but his mother was hugging her. All that time the young woman was bewitched. The maid she had with her was a powerful witch, that had cursed her not to feel loved herself unless she encountered true unconditional, pure love in someone else.
The town people ran to the house to find the witch, but there was nothing there but a small trail of ashes. The mothers love had vanquished her.
Time went on in the little town, and the boy lived happily ever after with his wife, and his mother who was always there to protect them. When the time came for the widow to die, the boy, the girl and their children were near the loving woman, and as she was withering away an angel of the Lord came and took her with him to heaven as if she was an angel herself.
